Halloween Party

We had a ward Fall Festival and a Trunk-or-Treat at the church on the Saturday before Halloween.  We took pictures of the kids costumes on this night because Halloween is always crazy when the kids rush home from school and throw on their costumes before trick or treating.

The costume rundown:

Kaydra – Ghost Bride

Kanyon – Harry Potter

Miranda – Cinderella

Timberlyn – Snow White

Shylee – Mommy’s little pumpkin

…Wow!  That’s a lot of kids.

Since Shylee is hard to see, here is a close up of her in her little outfit at 1 week, 3 days old.

Her poor eyes are still red from being squished at birth – perfect for Halloween costumes!

She didn’t really like laying on the floor – what a mean mom! (But such a cute bottom! )

Pumpkins

Time to update the blog again.  After Shylee came home it was time for Halloween!  The kids were excited to carve pumpkins as usual.  This is also the anniversary time of my blog.  My first blog post was about carving pumpkins for Halloween in 2007.  I can’t believe I have been at this for 6 years.  It is definitely the most successful attempt at journaling I have had in all my life.  I am thankful for all these memories that are being saved for posterity.

Anyway, back to carving pumpkins!  Everyone was home since Leonard had some time off work for the baby.  It’s nice that the big kids can carve all by themselves now.  It was actually a pretty fun activity and their pumpkins turned out great.

For those that don’t know, Timberlyn’s hair always looks like this on Monday.  I do it all cute on Sunday and then she pulls it out on Sunday night and it looks like this…. Every. Single. Monday.  Winking smile

First REAL bath

Shylee got her first real bath on October 29,  after her cord fell off, in my awesome kitchen sink.  It is the perfect baby bath.  I love it.  It was just me, Timber, and Miranda at home when I bathed her and Miranda was the photographer.

She’s getting bigger and more alert everyday.   She loved the bath.  She was calm and happy until I got her out.  Her hair seems to be getting a bit darker and her eyes seem to be getting lighter.  I think they might be blue!  So fun to watch her grow.  At her two week appointment she weighed in at 9 pounds 13 ounces.  She is 21.5 inches long – same as birth.  The doctor said she looks great and seems to be thriving.  She is finally sleeping better at night.  She eats every 4 hours, usually pretty quickly and then falls back to sleep without much help.  I am feeling pretty good and have no trouble taking naps in the afternoon while Shylee and Timber sleep after we take Miranda to the afternoon kindergarten bus.  It’s starting to be my favorite time of day – nap time!

Welcome Home

We brought Shylee home on October 17 – her due date.  It was great to be bringing home a baby instead of still being pregnant!  I wanted to post some pictures of the day we brought her home.

I also wanted to remember a couple things I left out of her birth story.  Shylee was 9 pounds 3 ounces – Leonard and I were both shocked when they weighed her.   I think I said, “Holy Crap!!”  Smile

She also had the cord wrapped around her neck and her umbilical cord was tied in a perfect square knot.  A few people in the room gasped when they saw that.  My nurse said, “She is a miracle baby.  A knot in the cord is the most common reason for stillbirth in full-term pregnancies.”  I am glad she said that AFTER we knew that Shylee was going to be just fine.  They did show us the knot – I wish I had taken a picture.  Looked pretty tight to me, thankfully everything was okay.   Babies are amazing!

Now for pictures.  YAY!!

Cleaning up

The nurses had fun trying to take pictures of Shylee during her bath after Leonard left.  They were trying different settings to see if they could get one that didn’t make her look so dang beat up.  They got a few good ones!  She is such a chubby girl!  I love her cheeks!

This first shot was the one that inspired them to try other settings.  She looked so pathetic with her bruised face.

Shylee Meets the Family

Last post was mostly text, this will be mostly pictures.  Shylee is now home with us and doing great.  She is a great eater and is starting to get the idea that night time is for sleeping.  Still a little to work on there.  I wanted to post pictures of the kids meeting Shylee in the hospital.

It was a school day the day she was born so Leonard came to the hospital with the little girls first while Kaydra and Kanyon were at school.  He came in the morning right before Miranda went to kindergarten.   This is also the first time Leonard held her…

Then the girls got a chance…

Later in the evening, after Kaydra’s volleyball game, he came back with all the kids and Kaydra and Kanyon got to meet their new little sister.   They were just a little excited! Smile

Shylee’s Story

I decided that it’s time I write a bit about the birth of our 5th child.  I can’t believe I am the mother of FIVE!  I wanted to write a bit about her story before I forget the details…you have been warned!

I had contractions off and on all week.  A couple of times they kept me awake for 2-3 hours at night.  One night I got everything packed and ready to go, took a shower…and they stopped!  So frustrating.  The nurse midwife I saw scheduled me for an induction on my due date, so I knew there was an end in site, but the last few weeks of pregnancy are SO HARD!  Endless days of waiting for something to happen and then disappointment when it doesn’t.  Not to mention the fact that bending over to tie your shoes is nearly impossible, as is picking up the house after a toddler.  I found it better to just leave things on the floor and wait until someone more flexible was around to pick up after Timberlyn! Smile The baby was also still very high clear until the end which meant that I was constantly feeling pressure on my rib cage and taking a deep breath was nearly out of the question.  YUCK!

Anyway, on Monday, October 14 Leonard had to work a 3-11pm shift.  As I was getting the kids ready for bed, things started changing.  I thought my water broke, but then it stopped – not typical for water breaking so I thought I would just wait to see what happened.  Leonard called around 8:00 and I told him that I might be going into labor.  I told him to continue to work but to come home prepared that we might be heading right back to the hospital.  I also told him I would call if things changed.  Because of all my contractions that ended up stopping, I don’t think he really took me seriously.

About 9:30pm I started having contractions again.  I wasn’t really timing them because I knew that they were irregular.  One thing I did remember from last time was that real labor meant contractions almost like clockwork.  Instead, I swept and mopped my kitchen, bathroom, dining room, and entry floor.  One last thing to get done before the baby came!  After I finished mopping, I sat down to watch a show and noticed that the contractions were getting more frequent and starting to hurt more.  By 11:00 pm I was pretty sure they weren’t going to stop but they were still tolerable so I thought I would wait for Leonard to get home.  He came home about 11:45 and I told him we should go to the hospital.  I remember that he said, “Do you think they’ll send us home?”  I said, “It’s my 5th baby and I am due in 2 days…I think they’ll keep me.”  He called his dad to come over to stay with the kids.  They gave me a blessing and we headed to the hospital at midnight.

We had to turn around and go back home after we hit the highway because I forgot my purse.  I wasn’t sure if I would need my insurance card or not (I didn’t) so we turned around.  We finally made it to the ER about 12:15.  I always think it’s weird that they bring you a wheelchair when you are in labor.  I mean, really, who wants to sit down?  I never do…yet they seem to be almost forcing me into the wheelchair.  I would have much rather walked, but they made me ride.  They did let me stand while we were checking in at the desk though.  The lady at the desk said I looked really calm.  She asked if it was my first baby, when I said it was my 5th she said, “Give me one of those stickers with your name on it so I don’t have to look you up again when they call me and say you are going to be admitted!”  Funny.

We made it to Labor and delivery about 12:30 and my nurse was Stephanie.  She was great.  Very calm, didn’t get worked up about anything really.   I was grateful.  They found me to be 5cm dilated and they said I was definitely staying.  They also said the doctor would be right in because he was already here for another laboring mom.  Perfect.  They started my IV and gave me some fluid while I continued to have increasingly painful contractions.  The doctor came in and said they wanted me to have two doses of antibiotics (to prevent me from passing bacteria to the baby) before she was born.  The trick is that the doses are supposed to be 4 hours apart.  I told him that I wouldn’t make it 4 more hours so one dose would have to do.  He said that after one dose, if I was really ready, he would break my water…so that became the goal.  It took FOREVER for the antibiotic to get to the floor.  I know how things work in the hospital, they often take a long time, but I didn’t get the antibiotic until 1:30!  Then it seemed to become a game of waiting for the antibiotic to slowly drip into my vein.  On the bright side, baby was doing great.  Her heart rate was 145-160 and she didn’t seem to be having any distress.  I was having plenty of distress for both of us.  Contractions hurt, REALLY BAD!!  Especially when they are pretty much right on top of one another.

Around 2:00 am, with the antibiotic almost done, I said I thought I had to push.  Stephanie checked me and I was 8 cm, almost 9 cm.  So she called in the doctor.  They were worried because the baby was still really high.  I could still feel her in my ribs and they were having trouble feeling her head.  The doctor checked me with the same result, and he decided to do a quick ultra sound to make sure that baby was head down.  They really couldn’t tell and didn’t want to break my water if she was breech.  The ultrasound showed her head down (Yay!)  and he said he would break my water if I was ready.  READY!! For goodness sake, yes I am ready!!

Water was broken and unfortunately had a little meconium in it so they called a pediatrician (never made it) to come in and help with baby.  They also had several other nurses in there and a respiratory therapist to help suction the baby if needed.  Once everyone that was going to make it was there, he FINALLY said I could push – which was good, because I was already pushing.

I am not gonna lie.  This baby was my toughest to push.  Kaydra was longer, but this was much more painful.  Her big head was finally out and I STILL had to push – like three times! – just to get the rest of her out.  Then it was done – She was born at 2:15 am. on October 15.   Only 15 minutes after I said I thought I needed to push and only about 5 minutes after the antibiotic was finished.  SO, SO, SO, FAST!  The poor thing showed signs of just how fast she came into this world.  15 minutes earlier they couldn’t tell if she was head down, and now she was here.  A little beat up, but she was here!

Shylee newborn3 Seriously, look at that bruised face!  The camera flash made it worse then it looked in person, but she was pretty bruised!   Since we hadn’t decided on her name, Leonard said, “Maybe we should call her Violet.”  Everyone says when you look at your baby you will better know what to name them.  I said, “No.”  Her APGAR scores were 8 and 9.  She didn’t have any trouble breathing and I was SO relieved it was over and the next phase could begin!  It is still THE most amazing thing to have a baby inside you one minute and then laying on your chest the next.  Nothing compares in this world….Nothing!

She is amazing and we love this little girl so much already.  Welcome to our home, Shylee.

Love, Mom and Dad

As a side note, after they got me all cleaned up and fed Leonard was looking pretty tired.  He decided to head home to help get the kids off to school.  He was back home and in bed asleep by 4:00 am.  He was only gone for 4 hours – the kids never even knew we weren’t there.  Did I tell you that it was FAST??!!!

Sports!

We have been so busy the past month!  This is good because it keeps my mind off the fact that I am still very pregnant and uncomfortable.  All is well with the pregnancy and we expect this little muchkin to come anytime.  I’ve had a few days that I thought, “This is it!” only to be disappointed when the contractions went away.  They plan to induce me on my due date, October 17, if the baby hasn’t made it here by then.  Less then a week away.  I think I am actually ready – if that’s possible.  I have gobs of clothes (as long as the ultrasound tech was correct in her prediction of a girl!), the car seat is washed and ready to go, I had all my carpets cleaned. and the last two days I have spent putting about 15 meals in my freezer for us to eat after she arrives.   I am ready anytime, but Leonard would like a couple days to take Kaydra hunting before the babies arrival.  So far, the baby is complying with his wishes!  Just remember who’s sacrificing her body for you little one! Winking smile

Anyway, back to the original purpose of this post.  We have been extremely busy with soccer and volleyball since the middle of September.  One of the kids has a game or practice nearly every day of the week!  It’s been crazy.

Kaydra is playing volleyball with her middle school.  There are about 24 girls on the team so they made two teams of 12.  She plays two matches every Tuesday and Thursday and usually plays every other game in the match.  I am surprised how hard it is to just watch.  I really feel like I want to be out there coaching.  She is having a good time though and they are all improving little by little.  The last game she had several good serves – which at this age, is pretty much all you need!

Kanyon is playing soccer with the park and rec. league in town.  They practice or play a game 2-3 times a week.  Usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday.   He has mostly been playing fullback, which means defender and he is doing pretty well.  He can anticipate the ball and where it might go.  It’s actually the most fun I have had watching soccer.  It’s nice to see kids that seem to actually know what they are doing.

Miranda also has been playing soccer with park and rec.  She didn’t have a coach so the families kinda took turns coaching.  They played two 30 minute games every Tuesday for the last 4 weeks and they are now finished.  They played 3 on 3 on a short field.  She had LOVED it.  She would ask everyday if it was a soccer day.  She loves to run and managed to score a couple goals in each of her last few games.

Timberlyn has just been busy being dragged from one game to the next.  She is a trooper though and seems to like seeing her brother and sisters play.  I am glad to say, however,  that after next week, they will all be done with their activities for now.  It is comforting to me to look at the calendar and see it pretty much blank after the 20th of October.  There is nothing like having a new baby that makes you curb back your activities.  Maybe the next post will be announcing her arrival!  Until then…..
